Film students on set filming at The los Angeles Film School Stage

You can take a virtual tour! (flash interactive presentation).

  Machine Room
This is the facility's central nervous system, through which all images are channeled. The Machine Room houses a wide assortment of VTR's: HDCAM, Digital-Betacam, DVCAM, U-matic and Super VHS. There are provisions for up to 26 different machines as well as DVD players, CD players, DAT recorders, etc. Two Quality Control stations are available for signal monitoring, allowing
an operator to fully qualify images from a technical perspective. The stations include High Definition and Standard Definition waveform monitors and vectorscopes, analog and digital audio signal monitors and timecode analyzers.
  Stage One
The HD stage is 1,900 square feet and capped with a 15-foot-high lighting grid, hard-wired with a dimmer-per-circuit electrical distribution system. Lighting is controlled with a Strand GSX computerized dimming console that features unlimited pre-programmed presets and cues and has the ability to produce sophisticated chase and sequenced lighting special effects. The stage is surrounded with a 360-degree double track curtain system. Curtain choices include blackout velour, 18 percent gray, and blue and green panels for chroma key effects. Portable HD camcorders, including the Sony HDW-F900 24P and HDW-F700 1080i models, are available for student location checkout as well as stage shooting.

  Stage Two
The film side of the soundstage is 1,880 square feet and features a 180-degree seamless infinite cyclorama, allowing for a myriad of applications and effects, including exterior day and night horizons as well as void and limbo backgrounds. The cyc surface is an ideal surface for projected scenic effects and can be green- or blue-screened for digital effects work. The stage includes a modular set system of 4x8 panels that consists of doors, windows and blank walls. These are expandable in height to 10' and can be connected to create many different interior configurations. The lighting grid for stage two is positioned at 18 feet to allow for versatile scenic elements. Both stages are equipped with state-of-the-art MOLE RICHARDSON and ARRIFLEX lighting and grip packages. The floor of both stages is hardwood Maple with a smooth finish to make camera moves nearly effortless. Platforming is available to create different height levels.

  Dubbing Stage
Certified Sound concentration students mix in our state-of-the-art Dubbing Stage constructed with outstanding theater acoustics in mind. The 96-input Solid State Logic Axiom digital audio mixing console combines the best of SSL's design features with the latest developments in digital technology, featuring a fully-automatable surround-sound desktop surface. Outboard racks contain Lexicon's 480L and the new surround-sound 960L reverberators, three TC Electronics Finalizer mastering limiters, two TC Electronic's Fireworx effects boxes, Dolby Laboratories' DP563, DP569, and DP562 Multichannel and Surround encoder and decoders, Dolby's Surround Sound SEU4 encoder and SDU4 decoder, a Tascam DA-98 digital eight-track upgraded with AES I/O, a variable-speed CD player, a timecode DAT recorder, and a Precision Analog MPA100 microphone pre-amp. Playback is through a 5.1 plus Dolby EX active Genelec speakers with room equalization via three TC Electronic TC1128 digital EQ's. Audio sources interfacing with the console in the adjacent machine room include Tascam MMR8 and MMP16 digital dubbers and a 64-track Pro Tools Mix workstation, controllable from within the dub stage, as well as the Machine Room. The mixing room's wide-screen high definition projector allows an audio source from our high definition stage to be mixed live, including everything from video programs to live music acts.

  Equipment Room
The Equipment Room contains all the equipment available for student check-out, particularly Sony High Definition camcorders, Canon and Sony digital video cameras, Arriflex and Panavision 35mm, and 16mm camera packages, mounting equipment, lighting and grip gear, and world-class sound equipment, including Fostex timecode DAT recorders and a selection of top-of-the-line professional microphones from Neumann, Sennheiser, Schoeps, and Audio-Technica with accompanying location sound accessories. The Equipment Room also houses a library of over 2500 VHS Tapes, DVD's, film scripts, music and Sound Effect CD's, books, directories, catalogues and manuals.

  Theater
The Los Angeles Film School has complete screening facilities for 35mm, 16mm and all video formats, boasting one of the few true 24P High Definition Projection Systems in a large-venue theater in Hollywood. Fully THX-certified and complete with Dolby Digital SR-D plus Dolby EX surround sound capabilities, the theater seats a whopping 340 in stadium-style seats! The school encourages screenings in order to address the specific interests of the students. The film school also invites our Advisory Board members as well as other industry professionals to attend the school screenings and lead question and answer sessions with the students.
  Avid Editing Workstations
Our picture editing facilities consist of twelve Avid Media Composer 1000s, completely upgraded to handle film projects and High Definition video including 24P, located in one editing classroom with a large flat-panel screen for teaching and playback, and two discrete editing rooms. Workstations are networked and equipped with dual 21" RGB monitors, Sony 14" broadcast-quality monitors, ample portable media storage, near-field speakers, and Mackie mixers. Digital-Betcam, DVCAM, and S-VHS video decks in the Annex Room directly support these rooms, with the Machine Room indirectly supporting HDCAM material. A separate classroom with mini-DV decks and nine Avid Xpress DV editing workstations ease the students' transition into the Media Composer.
  Moviemagic/Screenwriting/Internet Lab
Besides a breathtaking view of the Hollywood Hills, this lab has ten stations with 19" monitors. Each station is dedicated to Photoshop, Moviemagic, production needs and internet access.
Video streaming on the internet is available from our in-house facility. Selected students' projects are streamed on Windows Media Player.
Panavision Film and Canon Digital Cameras
The Los Angeles Film School's innovative video production equipment includes 20 of the popular Canon XL1 Mini-DV Camcorders as a production workhorse. These units are accessorized with manual film-type lenses, advanced mounting and stabilizing apparatus, cinema filters, and professional audio interfacing. This unique camera package affords a much wider range of professional quality creative choices to the student filmmaker. Additionally, our concentration on 35mm and 16mm film cameras sets us apart from traditional film schools. We offer Panavision and Arri BL camera systems to our students as well as exposure to the Panavision Millennium and Arri 435/535 camera systems.

A dedicated voice-over and Foley booth with a large window overlooking a control room equipped with a Mackie 32x8 8-bus mixer is currently being integrated with our racks of Foley props. Access to the Equipment Room's extensive world-class microphone collection (Schoeps, Sennheiser, Neumann) is standard as well as interfacing with the Machine Room and video decks through the adjacent Annex Room. A huge collection of sound effects is available on CD as well as online over our proprietary, networked sound effects server.
  Panavision Cinematography Lab
  >On February 2, 2000, the film school dedicated its new cinematography lab to Panavision. The 930 square foot cinematography lab is equipped with a full electrified lighting grid controlled by a dimming board, and has a poured self-leveled floor for professional dolly usage. With wrap-around blackout curtains, the lab is ideal for small film and digital, lighting exercises and cinematography classes.
  Production Design and Scenery/Properties Shop
Created to inspire designers, the Production Design Classroom overlooks the Hollywood Hills and is equipped with drafting tables set in a bright and airy workspace. In addition, the students will find tools and references necessary to enhance the comprehension and construction of the production design. Soon to be added is a complete scenery and properties shop, giving the creative production design student a facility to construct, detail, texturize, and finish scenic elements and backgrounds.
  Producers Lab
Our 725 square foot Producers Lab, with 13 producing cubicles is equipped with telephones, plus a fax machine, copy machine and computer workstations with Movie Magic Budgeting and Scheduling software and high-speed internet access.
