This is the facility's central
nervous system, through which all images are channeled.
The Machine Room houses a wide assortment of VTR's: HDCAM,
Digital-Betacam, DVCAM, U-matic and Super VHS. There are
provisions for up to 26 different machines as well as DVD
players, CD players, DAT recorders, etc. Two Quality Control
stations are available for signal monitoring, allowing
an operator to fully qualify images from a technical perspective.
The stations include High Definition and Standard Definition
waveform monitors and vectorscopes, analog and digital audio
signal monitors and timecode analyzers. |

The HD stage is 1,900 square
feet and capped with a 15-foot-high lighting grid, hard-wired
with a dimmer-per-circuit electrical distribution system.
Lighting is controlled with a Strand GSX computerized dimming
console that features unlimited pre-programmed presets and
cues and has the ability to produce sophisticated chase
and sequenced lighting special effects. The stage is surrounded
with a 360-degree double track curtain system. Curtain choices
include blackout velour, 18 percent gray, and blue and green
panels for chroma key effects. Portable HD camcorders, including
the Sony HDW-F900 24P and HDW-F700 1080i models, are available
for student location checkout as well as stage shooting. |

The film side of the soundstage
is 1,880 square feet and features a 180-degree seamless
infinite cyclorama, allowing for a myriad of applications
and effects, including exterior day and night horizons as
well as void and limbo backgrounds. The cyc surface is an
ideal surface for projected scenic effects and can be green-
or blue-screened for digital effects work. The stage includes
a modular set system of 4x8 panels that consists of doors,
windows and blank walls. These are expandable in height
to 10' and can be connected to create many different interior
configurations. The lighting grid for stage two is positioned
at 18 feet to allow for versatile scenic elements. Both
stages are equipped with state-of-the-art MOLE RICHARDSON
and ARRIFLEX lighting and grip packages. The floor of both
stages is hardwood Maple with a smooth finish to make camera
moves nearly effortless. Platforming is available to create
different height levels. |

Certified Sound concentration
students mix in our state-of-the-art Dubbing Stage constructed
with outstanding theater acoustics in mind. The 96-input
Solid State Logic Axiom digital audio mixing console combines
the best of SSL's design features with the latest developments
in digital technology, featuring a fully-automatable surround-sound
desktop surface. Outboard racks contain Lexicon's 480L and
the new surround-sound 960L reverberators, three TC Electronics
Finalizer mastering limiters, two TC Electronic's Fireworx
effects boxes, Dolby Laboratories' DP563, DP569, and DP562
Multichannel and Surround encoder and decoders, Dolby's
Surround Sound SEU4 encoder and SDU4 decoder, a Tascam DA-98
digital eight-track upgraded with AES I/O, a variable-speed
CD player, a timecode DAT recorder, and a Precision Analog
MPA100 microphone pre-amp. Playback is through a 5.1 plus
Dolby EX active Genelec speakers with room equalization
via three TC Electronic TC1128 digital EQ's. Audio sources
interfacing with the console in the adjacent machine room
include Tascam MMR8 and MMP16 digital dubbers and a 64-track
Pro Tools Mix workstation, controllable from within the
dub stage, as well as the Machine Room. The mixing room's
wide-screen high definition projector allows an audio source
from our high definition stage to be mixed live, including
everything from video programs to live music acts. |

The Equipment Room contains all
the equipment available for student check-out, particularly
Sony High Definition camcorders, Canon and Sony digital
video cameras, Arriflex and Panavision 35mm, and 16mm camera
packages, mounting equipment, lighting and grip gear, and
world-class sound equipment, including Fostex timecode DAT
recorders and a selection of top-of-the-line professional
microphones from Neumann, Sennheiser, Schoeps, and Audio-Technica
with accompanying location sound accessories. The Equipment
Room also houses a library of over 2500 VHS Tapes, DVD's,
film scripts, music and Sound Effect CD's, books, directories,
catalogues and manuals. |

The Los Angeles Film School has
complete screening facilities for 35mm, 16mm and all video
formats, boasting one of the few true 24P High Definition
Projection Systems in a large-venue theater in Hollywood.
Fully THX-certified and complete with Dolby Digital SR-D
plus Dolby EX surround sound capabilities, the theater seats
a whopping 340 in stadium-style seats! The school encourages
screenings in order to address the specific interests of
the students. The film school also invites our Advisory
Board members as well as other industry professionals to
attend the school screenings and lead question and answer
sessions with the students. |

Avid
Editing Workstations |

Our picture editing facilities
consist of twelve Avid Media Composer 1000s, completely
upgraded to handle film projects and High Definition video
including 24P, located in one editing classroom with a large
flat-panel screen for teaching and playback, and two discrete
editing rooms. Workstations are networked and equipped with
dual 21" RGB monitors, Sony 14" broadcast-quality
monitors, ample portable media storage, near-field speakers,
and Mackie mixers. Digital-Betcam, DVCAM, and S-VHS video
decks in the Annex Room directly support these rooms, with
the Machine Room indirectly supporting HDCAM material. A
separate classroom with mini-DV decks and nine Avid Xpress
DV editing workstations ease the students' transition into
the Media Composer. |

Moviemagic/Screenwriting/Internet
Lab |

Besides a breathtaking view of
the Hollywood Hills, this lab has ten stations with 19"
monitors. Each station is dedicated to Photoshop, Moviemagic,
production needs and internet access.
Video streaming on the internet is available from our in-house
facility. Selected students' projects are streamed on Windows
Media Player. |

Film and Canon Digital Cameras |

The Los Angeles Film School's
innovative video production equipment includes 20 of the
popular Canon XL1 Mini-DV Camcorders as a production workhorse.
These units are accessorized with manual film-type lenses,
advanced mounting and stabilizing apparatus, cinema filters,
and professional audio interfacing. This unique camera package
affords a much wider range of professional quality creative
choices to the student filmmaker. Additionally, our concentration
on 35mm and 16mm film cameras sets us apart from traditional
film schools. We offer Panavision and Arri BL camera systems
to our students as well as exposure to the Panavision Millennium
and Arri 435/535 camera systems. |

Digidesign
Pro Tools Digital Audio Workstations |
 |
|
Four Pro Tools Mix digital audio
workstations are available for sound design, editing, recording,
and mixing. Each workstation is housed in an Apple PowerMac
G4 and comes outfitted with a large 21" RGB monitor,
a large 21" NTSC monitor, a variable-speed CD player,
a DAT recorder (two with timecode and chase capabilities),
a Tascam DA-98 digital 8-track recorder upgraded with AES
digital I/O, a rewriteable DVD-RAM drive, a rewriteable
CD-RW drive, either an analog or digital audio mixer, CM
AUTOmation's Motor Mix for moving-fader remote control,
Aurora Fuse digital picture playback (no video deck required!),
a MOTU midi and timecode interface, compact surround sound
monitoring, an assortment of Pro Tools 3rd-party sound design
plug-ins, and the highest-end analog/digital audio interface
with the ability to record at 24bits, one-and-half times
beyond that of CD's! A dedicated voice-over and Foley booth
with a large window overlooking a control room equipped
with a Mackie 32x8 8-bus mixer is currently being integrated
with our racks of Foley props. Access to the Equipment Room's
extensive world-class microphone collection (Schoeps, Sennheiser,
Neumann) is standard as well as interfacing with the Machine
Room and video decks through the adjacent Annex Room. A
huge collection of sound effects is available on CD as well
as online over our proprietary, networked sound effects
server. |

Panavision
Cinematography Lab |

>On February 2, 2000, the film
school dedicated its new cinematography lab to Panavision.
The 930 square foot cinematography lab is equipped with
a full electrified lighting grid controlled by a dimming
board, and has a poured self-leveled floor for professional
dolly usage. With wrap-around blackout curtains, the lab
is ideal for small film and digital, lighting exercises
and cinematography classes. |

Production
Design and Scenery/Properties Shop |
 |
|
Created to inspire designers,
the Production Design Classroom overlooks the Hollywood
Hills and is equipped with drafting tables set in a bright
and airy workspace. In addition, the students will find
tools and references necessary to enhance the comprehension
and construction of the production design. Soon to be added
is a complete scenery and properties shop, giving the creative
production design student a facility to construct, detail,
texturize, and finish scenic elements and backgrounds. |

Our 725 square foot Producers
Lab, with 13 producing cubicles is equipped with telephones,
plus a fax machine, copy machine and computer workstations
with Movie Magic Budgeting and Scheduling software and high-speed
internet access. This classroom also includes a large conference
table set in a boardroom space for student production meetings. |
